Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek

Introduction

The Dagala Thousand Lakes Trek is a six-day highland journey through yak-grazing country south of Thimphu. Its name evokes the many clear alpine lakes scattered across the Dagala range. Between Genekha and Chamgang, the trail crosses open ridges, secluded camps and lake basins, with far-reaching Himalayan views when the weather is clear.

  1. Genekha to Gur: Climb from village and forest landscapes to the first high camp.
  2. Gur to Labatama: Continue through yak pasture and undulating ridge country towards the principal lake area.
  3. Explore the Dagala Lakes: Use a full day for nearby lakes and viewpoints, with the exact circuit selected for weather and group strength.
  4. Labatama to Panka: Cross open terrain and descend towards a sheltered camp.
  5. Panka to Tsheregang: Traverse ridges and forest with changing views towards the Thimphu side.
  6. Tsheregang to Chamgang: Make the final descent to the roadhead and transfer onward.

Difficulty and preparation

This is a non-technical trek but several days remain above 4,000 metres. Good cardiovascular fitness, previous hill-walking experience and acclimatisation are strongly recommended. Rain, mist, snow or boggy ground can make apparently moderate stages more demanding. Carry a warm sleep system, waterproof outer layers, sun protection and personal medication.

Frequently asked questions

Are there really one thousand lakes? The name is poetic rather than a literal count. The Dagala range contains numerous sacred alpine lakes spread across a broad highland area.

Is the trek suitable for children? Older, experienced hiking teenagers may manage it with medical and operator guidance. The sustained altitude makes it less suitable for young children or first-time family campers.
