Jomolhari–Laya–Gasa Trek

Page introduction

The Jomolhari–Laya–Gasa Trek is a major Himalayan traverse through northwestern Bhutan. From the Paro-side trailhead, it climbs to Jangothang beneath Mount Jomolhari, crosses high passes through Lingshi country, continues through remote valleys to Laya and finally descends towards Gasa. The combination of mountain scale, cultural encounters and sustained expedition travel makes it one of Bhutan’s finest long treks.

Difficulty and safety

This is a serious expedition with repeated high passes, cold nights and limited evacuation options. Participants should have prior high-altitude trekking experience and must not attempt to “push through” symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Snow and swollen rivers may force route changes.

Frequently asked questions

How does it compare with the Snowman Trek? It shares the journey through Laya but exits towards Gasa rather than continuing into isolated Lunana. It is shorter, yet still strenuous and remote.

Will there be a rest day? A day at Jangothang is strongly useful for acclimatisation. Operators may also adjust rest time based on group health and weather.
